- Studied vocational teaching methodology at the Technical University of Dresden, graduating with a diploma for the teaching of engineering
- 1981: Obtained doctorate in engineering at the University for Engineering in Berlin (now the HTW)
- 1991: Post-doctoral lecturing qualification at the University of Rostock
- 1989-1990: Science organisation and management at the Academy of Agrarian Sciences (GDR)
- 1992-1998: Managing Director of wibz (a charitable education and training centre)
- Since 2000: Head of the Steinbeis Transfer Centre for environmentally-aware construction and building materials
