- 1980: Degree in Economics (Dipl. Oec.) from the Gerhard Mercator University of Duisburg
- 1980-85: Research assistant at the Institut für Unternehmensführung (Institute of Management) at the FU Berlin; doctorate (Dr. rer. pol.)
- 1987-1995: Project manager at Daimler Benz AG, Robert Bosch GmbH, Schering AG; Director of Central Investment Planning at Schering AG
- Since 1995: Professor of Corporate Financial and Investment Policy.
- 1995-1998: Partner and consultant (specialising in the management of grants and subsidies) at Peter und Partner Potsdam, a management consultancy
- 1999-2001: Co-founder and later head of the supervisory board of Linkedwith GmbH, with offices in Berlin, Riga and New Dehli
