Brief history of the Berlin School of Economics (BSE)

2009 The Berlin School of Economics and Law (BSEL) was founded on 1 April 2009 through the merger of the Berlin School of Economics (BSE) and the FHVR Berlin
2007 The "Environmental and Quality Management" certificate programme restructured as an MA in "Sustainability and Quality Management" in the IMB

Start of the MA in "Chinese-European Economics and Business Studies“

Founding of the UAS7 e. V. non-profit making association of Universities of Applied Sciences as the further development of the UAS7 consortium
2006/2007 Accreditation of all Bachelor, Master and MBA programmes in both Faculties and the IMB
2005/2006 Extending the wing of the main campus building at Badensche Straße 50–51 to re-construct the top stories destroyed in the Second World War and so provide a larger pool of lecture and seminar rooms
2005 The remaining Faculty of Business and Economics (FB 1) programmes leading to the German Diploma degree restructured as Bachelor programmes

Opening of the New York Office of the UAS7 consortium of Universities of Applied Sciences

The BSE again receives the "Total E-Quality Award“ in recognition of its promotion of equal opportunities and gender equality

The BSE becomes the first University of Applied Sciences in Berlin to have its in-house environmental management system accredited as meeting German Industry Standards DIN ISO 14001
2004 Introduction of MA programmes:
"International Management" and "International Economics" were launched as consecutive MA degrees in the Faculty of Business and Economics (FB 1)

The IMB launched an MA in "Labour Policies and Globalisation" in cooperation with the University of Kassel
2003 Integration of the former Berufsakademie Berlin with 12 sandwich courses; the BSE is restructured into two Faculties and one central institute: Faculty of Business and Economics (FB 1); Faculty of Company-Linked Programmes (FB 2); and the IMB Institute of Management Berlin

Start of the "Business Administration“ and "Economics“ Bachelor programmes in FB 1 with financial assistance from the EU Structural Funds

BSE received the "Ökoprofit-Betrieb Berlin 2003“ award for implementing a series of environmentally-friendly measures
2002 Launching the "International Management" German-French diploma programme in cooperation with the Ecole Supérieure du Commerce Extérieur, ESCE, Paris

The BSE is awarded the "Total E-Quality Science Award“ in recognition of its dedicated equal opportunities policy
2001 Introducing the Company-linked Bachelor Programme in Business Administration with Siemens AG as the University's first undergraduate sandwich course

Founding of the Harriet Taylor Mill Institute, the first business university institute for gender studies
Late 1990s and 2000 on Launching new MBA programmes
  • 1998 – "German-Chinese MBA“ (today: "MBA European-Asian Programme“)
  • 2000 – "MBA Kleine und Mittlere Unternehmen“ (today "MBA Entrepreneurship)
1996 Founding of the Institute for Resource Conservation, Innovation and Sustainability (IRIS) as an independent institute under the BSE umbrella
Early 1990s Expanding the degree programmes:
Launching international study programmes
  • e.g., cooperation with Anglia Ruskin University (ARU), Cambridge (1990)
  • first MBA programmes (part-time and full-time) offered together with UK partners (ARU and London South Bank University, LSBU – 1992)

Introducing interdisciplinary programmes interfacing with other subject areas (e.g., environmental studies)
1980s Number of students grow steadily (1981: 888 students; 1991: 2,225 students)
1971 The Berlin School of Economics was founded as the successor to the Wirtschaftsakademie Berlin, which had been created in 1965 through a merger of the Hochschulinstitut für Wirtschaftskunde and the Höheren Wirtschaftsfachschule.
