First steps in Berlin
The following list may help you to organise your first steps in Berlin. It is most expedient to follow the given order.
1. Lease contract
A lease contract needs to be signed with the students’ residence hall or private landlord.
2. International Office
Collect your student identification card and your welcome brochure from the International Office. Write down your contact details in the list in the International Office. Pay eventually open amount for the Semesterticket.
3. Health Insurance
EU-citizens:
- Please bring along your European Health Insurance Card (EHIC)
- If you are not insured you can make a contract with a health insurance company in Berlin.(see addresses listed below)
In any case – please bring the health insurance document to the International Office of the FHW (Badensche Str. 50-51, room 57+58)
4. Registration at the police (Meldebehörde)
- Registration at the Meldebehörde (Registration office).
- You can either register in the city-hall of Schöneberg (Rathaus), address: John-F.-Kennedy-Platz
- or ask in the residence hall for the address of the nearest Registration office
- or look up the addresses in the Internet:www.berlin.de/LEA where you can also download the application forms
Please note: bring along your passport and lease contract - Label for Application form for payment of 100 Euro „Welcome Money“ and return the form to the International Office
- Ask for a special form for EU citizens (EU-Freizügigkeitsbescheinigung/certificate of liberality) within the EU, which needs to be filled in
5. Ausländerbehörde (Aliens Registration Authority)
Non-EU-citizens:
Get the form at the International Office and take it together with the registration form, 2 photos, passport, student id, proof of a valid health insurance, a proof of sufficient income (scholarship, bank account record or a note from the parents) and 40 Euro to the aliens registration authority (Ausländerbehörde)

6. Bank account
You can go to any bank to open your student account free of charge. Bring along your passport, Student Identity card and the “Meldebehörde”-certificate. If you want to apply for 100 Euro “Welcome money” you need to have a bank account in Berlin.
