New English-language Master Programme at the BSEL
28 May 2009 As the diploma degree is phased out, the Berlin School of Economics and Law (BSEL) is expanding and restructuring its range of business and economics Master programmes building on undergraduate qualifications. From the 2009/10 winter semester on, prospective post-graduate students have a choice of three Master programmes in business administration (International Marketing Management, International Finance, or Financial & Managerial Accounting) and one in macro-economics (International Economics).
The Master programmes are taught exclusively in English and in small, international groups (intake of 35 students per course). Depending on the applicant's Bachelor degree, the programmes last three or four semesters. The first semester is dedicated to establishing the knowledge base required at this level of study. Students then acquire in-depth skills in an area of specialisation during the second semester and, during the third semester, prepare and submit a Master's thesis and take the final oral exam (oral defence). Students can usually opt to take a work placement semester in the programme; in some cases, though, a work placement semester is mandatory.
In general, all programmes follow the University's principle of teaching applied skills in an interdisciplinary and international approach. The programmes not only provide in-depth knowledge and competences in specialised areas, but also include a General Studies module and other electives intended to hone soft skills and expand horizons. Tutorials combined with individual and group coaching sessions ensure a clear focus and goal-orientation in the programme. The general learning process is further supported by case studies and research projects helping to develop practical problem solving skills.
The Master programmes are designed for graduates in business or economics (Bachelor degree or the German Diploma qualification), with a strong basis in the subject and good English language skills. The MA degree does not only provide a qualification testifying to greater academic knowledge, but also enhances career chances in both specialist positions and executive management in the private sector. In the public administration sector, the Master degree is recognised as a qualification allowing the holder to apply for posts in the senior civil service.
The deadline for applications is 15 June 2009 for EU applicants and 30 May 2009 for non-EU applicants.
