Become a Buddy
Being a Buddy is a great experience!
Who can become a Buddy?
If you are already studying at the Berlin School of Economics and Law (BSEL), you can register to become a Buddy – not only helping incoming international students adjusting to a new environment, but also giving yourself the chance to use your foreign language skills in real-life situations, getting to know different cultures and making friends with people from all over the world.
What does a Buddy do?
The guiding principle is to provide international students with an insight into the lifestyle and culture of Berlin while supporting them, especially during their first weeks, to get along in the new host country.
Buddies are a “source of support and information” on all concerns, from an academic perspective to a personal one. In addition, they introduce exchange students to the university's social and academic life, as well as suggest further contacts. Many Buddies end up with new friends who they stay in contact with even a long time after the semester is over.
The specific tasks of a Buddy are informally defined as:
- Getting in touch with the visiting/exchange student (usually by email) before s/he arrives in Berlin
- Meeting at least twice, especially in the first weeks after arrival. The frequency of possible future meetings will depend on the rapport established between the Buddy and the exchange student
- Giving the exchange student an idea of what life is like in Berlin. What are the academic demands of the university – your personal experience can be really valuable in providing an insight into student life- where could possible difficulties occur? If there are questions you cannot answer directly, simply help the new student to find the right contact person – or put them in touch with the International Office
Is there a Buddy support team?
There are three student advisors working at the International Office who are responsible for the Buddy Programme and everything that is concerned with it. They are the first contact persons for everyday questions about (student) life (housing, visa questions, insurance etc), the activity programme and any issues regarding university (course choice, examination procedures etc.).
Would you like to join our Buddy Programme and gain great experience?
You can download a Buddy application form above.
The International Office and visiting students are looking forward to your support!
