Finding a Buddy
If you are an exchange student, the Buddy Programme helps you get to know your host country better. Your Buddy is your first point of contact concerning questions about living and studying in Berlin.
The guiding principle is to provide international students with an insight into the lifestyle and culture of Berlin while supporting them, especially during their first weeks, to get along in the new host country.
Buddies are a “source of support and information” regarding all concerns, from an academic perspective to a personal one. In addition, they introduce exchange students to the university's social and academic life, as well as suggest further contacts. Many Buddies end up with new friends who they stay in contact with even a long time after the semester is over.
What does a Buddy do?
A Buddy might typically meet you on your first day and show you around the campus, give you advice on bank facilities or apartments or just show you where to get the best cup of coffee! A Buddy usually meets up with you again after a week or two to answer any other questions you might have.
But please remember - your Buddy is a volunteer and also studying! Your Buddy is there to help you to settle in, but the Buddy also has his/her own obligations afterwards.
Is there a Buddy Programme support team?
There are three student advisors working at the International Office who are responsible for the Buddy Programme and everything that is concerned with it. They are the first contact persons for everyday questions about (student) life (housing, visa questions, insurance etc.), the activity programme and any issues regarding university (course choice, examination procedures etc.).
How can I as an exchange student apply for the Buddy Programme?
The International Office attempts to assign a Buddy to every exchange student. We will get in contact with the international students some weeks before their arrival to Berlin and provide them with the necessary information.
