Social engagement almost always enriches the volunteer. This was the recent experience of 21 students from the HWR, who gave up their spare time during the university vacation to run seminars and workshops offered to refugees within the scope of the HWR-organized programme Students4Refugees. Everybody is a winner.

This was the second time that the HWR Berlin organized a Summer School for refugees in which students were able to pass on knowledge and teach German. This programme included daily German-language conversation groups and specialist seminars focusing on a range of topics such as life in Germany, Management Economics and Website Design.

Participation of the 3-week long Summer School – which included 19 participants from a number of countries including Syria, Ethiopia, Afghanistan, Iraq and Moldavia – was concluded with the award of certificates of attendance, presented by Prof Susanne Meyer, Vice President (Study and Student Services). In a short address, she praised the exceptional involvement of the HWR students, many of whom have roots outside Germany.

All the student volunteers commented that the work with the refugees was a valuable experience. Students interested in working with refugees can acquire the requisite skills within the scope of the seminars “Service Learning in working with refugees” and “Human Rights Advocates – Scholars at Risk” offered within the framework of the HWR General Studies programme. Participation in these courses are also open to auditing students. Further information is available from Cynthia Tilden-Machleidt.

Continuing its “JUST – Join Us and Study” programme, preparing refugees for study in Germany, the HWR invites refugees in Berlin to participate in “JUST – Deutsch”, a German-language course at B2 level which starts this October. Those enrolled in a “JUST – course” can participate in the various courses provided as part of the HWR Berlin General Studies course and other lessons. Funded by the DAAD, the course is provided free-of-charge.

All those interested in the subject refugees, migration and integration are invited to participate in the student-organized conference "Herkunft Zukunft" held at the HTW Berlin on 30 November.
