At the beginning of November 2022, the Berlin School of Economics and Law (HWR Berlin) and the German International University in Cairo (GIU) signed a strategic cooperation agreement for the first time. The aim is to intensify the cooperation between the GIU and the HWR Berlin in order to promote the exchange of students, teaching staff and researchers, said Prof. Dr. Andreas Zaby, President of the HWR Berlin.

Excellent teaching and research on an international level

From now on, lecturers and researchers at GIU and HWR Berlin will work more closely together with the aim of realising excellent practice-oriented teaching and research and promoting the internationalisation of both universities and their graduates. The agreed exchange and cooperation programmes facilitate the exchange of university staff and promote the development of further educational programmes.

Egypt needs well-trained professionals who meet the modern requirements of businesses. GIU's cooperation with HWR Berlin is an investment for the future generation.«

The agreement provides for the following measures, for instance:

  1. Exchange of students for one or more semesters
  2. Exchange and secondment of academic staff, researchers or administrative staff
  3. Exchange of information and support in the area of academic training
  4. Joint research and supervision of research projects, Bachelor's and Master's theses

The agreement focuses on the Bachelor's and Master's degree programmes in the field of business and economics.

How did the connection to Cairo come about?

"The German International University is a successful start-up," says Prof. Dr. Martin Uzik, Professor of Corporate Finance and Investment Policy at the Department of Business and Economics at the HWR Berlin. The GIU works intensively with the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD).

Through the DAAD, the chairman and founder Prof. Dr. Ashraf Mansour asked whether the HWR Berlin, together with several German universities of applied sciences, would like to contribute its expertise to the establishment of an university of applied sciences in Cairo based on the German model. This is how the cooperation between the HWR Berlin and the Egyptian university began.
