From June 3 to 6, 2025, around 90 students from four European universities – including HWR Berlin, Ulster University, the University of Liverpool, and Manchester Metropolitan University – took part in the Belfast Sustainability Challenge 2025. The project focused on creating sustainable concepts around the prestigious golf tournament The Open, which takes place this year in the coastal town of Portrush, Northern Ireland.

In interdisciplinary and international teams, participants developed creative solutions to ecological, social, and economic challenges – all with the goal of leaving a lasting, positive impact on the region.

From White Rocks Beach to the Pitch in Belfast City Hall

The project was divided into two phases: a digital prep session on May 27 and an on-site phase in Northern Ireland from June 3 to 6. In Portrush, the teams explored the tournament venue – including the golf course, beach, and town – engaged in conversations with local stakeholders, and gained insights into the R&A’s “GreenLinks” sustainability program.

Over the following two days, the groups worked intensively on their solutions. Supported by coaches and methodologies like design thinking, they created concepts such as sustainable accommodations, pop-up museums, and awareness campaigns to spotlight local initiatives. The highlight of the experience was the final pitch by the top teams at Belfast City Hall, in front of a panel of experts.

Overcoming Challenges – Strengthening Skills

Working in international teams brought together different communication styles, academic backgrounds, and approaches – a valuable challenge. Language barriers and organizational differences were tackled through clear agreements, openness, and mutual support. With less than 48 hours from problem definition to presentation, time pressure required efficient project management, prioritization, and teamwork.

“For me, stepping out of my comfort zone, both personally and professionally, was incredibly valuable. Thanks to the project, I have developed my existing skills, but also gained new perspectives and learned techniques that I will continue to use in the future. Last but not least, the exchange with students and advisors from a wide range of disciplines and countries has been an opportunity to network for the long term and perhaps even work together on projects in the future.”

Sustainability, Networks, and New Perspectives

Participants shared how impactful this hands-on international experience was. Many highlighted improved confidence, new insights into sustainability and event management, and stronger soft skills – especially in intercultural communication, leadership, and public speaking.

Some teams even developed ideas that could realistically be implemented locally – such as a temporary museum to promote local heritage or an innovative accommodation solution made from reusable materials.

A Unique Learning Opportunity

The Belfast Sustainability Challenge 2025 was more than just a university project – it was a true experience. The combination of local relevance, international collaboration, academic depth, and personal growth made this COIL project a real highlight of the students’ academic journey.

Participants agreed: Anyone who gets the chance to join such a project should take it. It broadens not only your academic knowledge but also your personal horizons, offering lasting impressions, new connections, and valuable skills for a sustainable future.
