How does it feel when you suddenly have to deal with company succession – under time pressure, with many perspectives and family tensions? The interactive Live Action Role Playing (LARP) programme from the Succession Lab (Nachfolgelabor) lets you experience exactly that. In a realistic role-playing game, participants slip into the roles of family members, employees and consultants of a medium-sized company – and negotiate the future together.

Learn like in real life – with your head, your heart and potential for conflict

The LARP is based on a fictional but realistic case: Moritz GmbH, a family-owned steel construction company, faces an uncertain future after the sudden departure of its General Manager. Players experience first-hand how complex, emotional and strategic a succession decision can be – and how important communication, values and diversity of perspectives are.

A win for many target groups:

Students experience corporate responsibility, decision-making dynamics and succession processes in a practical way – ideal for teaching economics, law, social sciences or education. Small and medium-sized enterprises and family businesses can use the LARP as a tool for reflection and awareness-raising, for example in workshops or succession planning. And the game also contributes to raising awareness in society: business succession is a key issue for preserving jobs, innovation and regional economic strength.

Didactic innovation with international potential

LARP is not just a game – it is a didactic tool that combines classic knowledge transfer with emotional experience. It promotes perspective change, empathy and strategic thinking. All game materials are now available in English, making them suitable for international universities, exchange programmes and multilingual groups, either in person or online.

Freely available for education and practice

The LARP was developed as part of a project funded by the German Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology by a team from the EMF Institute at the HWR Berlin under the head of Prof. Dr. Birgit Felden and is available free of charge on the website of the successor laboratory with all game materials.
