Semester fee

The state of Berlin currently does not charge any tuition fees for studying on Bachelor’s or consecutive Master's degree programmes. The universities do however charge a semester fee, made up of a contribution to the Studierendenwerk Berlin (German National Association for Student Affairs), the Student Council, the university administration and to cover the costs of the semester ticket, a travel pass which entitles its holder to travel on public transport.

This fee is payable every semester. The fee and its components are subject to adjustment, please keep up-to-date with relevant developments.

Explanation of the components of the fee

  1. Administration fee
This is to be paid every semester. Students studying through a programme (e.g. Erasmus students in Berlin for a year) are not required to pay the administration fee.

  2. Student body fee
All HWR Berlin students are automatically members of the student representative body and are required to pay this fee.

  3. Student union fee
The Studierendenwerk Berlin runs the student dining halls and cafes at the Berlin universities. It also provides student halls of residence and advice centres.

  4. Semester ticket
The semester ticket is a season ticket for public transport which is valid for the duration of a semester. The cost of this ticket is met by payment of the semester fee, which is due automatically upon enrolment and re-enrolment. This fee is not conditional upon use of public transport. The state of Berlin has passed legislation to regulate the working of the semester ticket.
For comparison: A conventional monthly season ticket costs 84 Euros and is only valid in Berlin (fare zones AB). Please address all questions about the semester ticket to the semester ticket office.
