The Summer School 2025 on Sustainability Challenges in a Global World has successfully wrapped up after two inspiring weeks of intensive learning and cultural exchange in Berlin.

A group of 11 students from Georgia, India, Singapore and Canada came together to explore pressing sustainability issues from an interdisciplinary perspective. With backgrounds in social sciences, IT, engineering, and business studies, the participants examined topics such as climate change, circular economy, sustainable finance, climate policy and artificial intelligence.

Students also gained valuable insights into corporate responsibility through a corporate talk by the chairman and the owner of PNZ, who shared real-life experiences of integrating sustainability into business practice. Socially relevant topics such as climate justice, human rights, and social innovation & entrepreneurship were key elements of the program.

The summer school combined interactive lectures, discussions, and group projects with field trips to Floating University and NochMall. A highlight was the Future Workshop, where students collaborated to design innovative sustainability solutions. Additionally, the program incorporated gamification through the ActionBund app, encouraging participants to discover key sustainability sites in Berlin.

Beyond the academic content, the group explored German culture and history through visits to iconic landmarks such as the Reichstag, the Holocaust Memorial, and sites of divided Berlin, gaining valuable intercultural insights.

The students completed the program with 6 ECTS credits, certifying their academic achievements and active participation in this intensive two-week course. Their diverse perspectives and international collaboration once again demonstrated how education can drive global efforts toward a more sustainable future.

This blended course is the newest addition to the HWR Berlin Summer School that annually welcomes international students, especially from partner universities, to Berlin for a short-term academic and cultural experience.
