Celebrating the Chinese New Year

The “year of earth dog” is said to bring a lot of positive energy; the number “8” in 2018 promises an extra portion of luck. The celebration of the Chinese New Year, held at the HWR Berlin on 16 February, was animated by both a spirit of cheerful confidence and the fragrances of Chinese cooking.

Students from the Master’s degree programme Chinese European Economics and Business Studies (CEEBS) cooked together to celebrate the start of this traditional Chinese festival. In South Asia, celebration of the New Year is the most important festival of the year. All those who can, return to their home village to prepare traditional dishes. This custom was reflected at the celebrations at the HWR Berlin; the Chinese students at the Berlin Professional School cooked “Jiaozi”, dumplings filled with meat and vegetables.

The Chinese-European Master’s degree programme taught in English at the Berlin Professional School at the HWR Berlin attracts a highly international clientele, with students from Germany, Great Britain, Poland, Italy, Canada, Malaysia, Hong Kong and China. Based in Berlin for two semesters, they study a range of issues involved in the economic development of China and Europe. Students also learn German and Chinese. The third semester is spent in the Southwestern University of Finance and Economics in Chengdu, where a further focus includes the culture and language
