Berlin, January 24th, 2023. The European Union is tightening sanctions against the Islamic Republic of Iran. Since Iranian banks have been excluded from the international payment messaging system SWIFT and payments can only be made by transferring cash across borders, German-Iranian foreign trade has also collapsed substantially. What is the current state of the economy in Iran, and what is the political situation like?

The Institute for International Political Economy Berlin (IPE) of the Hochschule für Wirtschaft und Recht Berlin (HWR Berlin) / Berlin School of Economics and Law invites to the Political Economy Forum entitled "The Current Uprising in Iran: Economic and Social Development since the 1979 Revolution" on January 26, 2023 from 16:00-18:00. The panel discussion in English is open to the public and takes place at HWR Berlin’s Schöneberg Campus, House B, Room B 3.01. A livestream will be available. To receive the link, please write to:

Dr Behzad Azarhoushang, economic researcher at IPE, will speak about the economic development in Iran. Dr Mahfarid Mansoorian, an Iranian environmentalist and researcher at the Technical University of Berlin, will discuss social movements and women's rights in Iran.
